Description

Work Rest and Play” is a four-track EP released by the British ska band, Madness in 1980. The EP features songs such as “Night Boat to Cairo,” “Deceives the Eye,” “The Young and the Old,” and “Don’t Quote Me on That.” The EP’s title is a nod to the British government’s “Three-Day Week” policy, implemented in 1974 to conserve energy during an economic crisis. The policy limited the working week to three days, with the remaining days designated as “rest” and “play.”
  • “Night Boat to Cairo” became a hit for the band and is now considered one of their most popular songs. It has a catchy, upbeat melody and tells the story of a wild night in Egypt.
  • “Deceives the Eye” is a slower, more melodic track that showcases the band’s range and versatility. It features a saxophone solo and explores the themes of deception and caution.
  • “The Young and the Old” is an energetic and lively song that celebrates the joys of youth and the memories that come with getting older. It features a fun, sing-along chorus and a bouncy rhythm.
  • “Don’t Quote Me on That” is a witty track that pokes fun at rumours and gossip. It features a prominent guitar riff and tongue-in-cheek lyrics that showcase the band’s sense of humour. Overall, “Work Rest and Play” showcases Madness’s early talent and creativity and remains a fan favourite today.
